Qiyamul Lail: Significance and Details of Qiyamullail
Here, we’ve tried to explain the definition of Qiyamul Lail, Qiyamullail in Qur’an and Sunah of Prophet SAWW, the significance of Qiyamullail in our lives and the effect of Qiyamullail on daily basis. So let’s start with the meaning and definition of Qiyamul Lail literally and according to Sharia also.
Qiyamul Lail
Literally, Qiyamullail is an Arabic phrase which is actually a combination of two Arabic words namely Qiyam and Lail, where in Arabic language, “Qiyam†means ‘standing’ and “Al-Lail†means ‘night’. Moreover, Qiyan also explains of ‘being active doing something’.
Therefore, if we combine these two words as Qiyamullail, it would be literally mean standing at night for some task.
Qiyamul-Lail in Islamic Ruling
As for Sharia meaning of Qiyamullail, it means to stand a night for praying, offering nimaz of performing Salat at night after Isha. Therefore, it includes every prayer that is performed after Ishah prayer and before that fajr time such as, Taraweeh and Tahajjud prayer, or any Nafil Ibadah you want to perform after Isha prayer with your choice.
So usually, it is referred to an optional prayer that is performed after Isha at night, despite of Tahajjud prayer. People do not use to refer Qiyamullail to Tahajjud. Even for Taraweeh prayer, the word Qiyamullail is not used, this is because Salat ut Taraweeh is performs just after an Ishah prayer.
Thus, Qiyamullail is said to be an optional prayer, that’s performed at night. That is what Qiyamullail could be referring to according to Islamic rulings and traditions.
Allah SWT says in Holy Quran, Surah Al-Zhariyaat: 51:15-18, that,
It means, “Indeed, the righteous will be among gardens and springs. Accepting what their Lord has given them. Indeed, they were before that; doers of righteous. They used to sleep but little of the night. And in the hours before dawn they would ask forgiveness…â€
And in an Hadith, narrated by Abu Hurairah r.a. and authenticated by Imam Muslim, Prophet Muhammad SAWW said,
“The best month for observing fasting, after Ramadan is Muharram, and the best Solat after the prescribed Solat is the Solat performed at night.â€
