Qiyam ul Layl in Quran
Offering qiyam ul layl is not only a tradition prevalent amongst Muslim Ummah, but also has significant proves in the Holy Quran, the only and last of from Almighty Allah SWT in its pure form on the face of the earth revealed on the last Messenger of Allah SWT, Hazrat Muhammad SAWW.
As we mentioned in our previous article the deep meaning and significance of Qiyamul lail in Islam and Ummat-e-Muslima, i.e. Qiyamullail is a voluntary prayer could be prayed after Ishah and before Fajr during whole night. That could be said to be an optional prayer, which is performed at night i.e. prayers for the night. That is what Qiyamullail could be referring to according to Islamic rulings and traditions. As for as evidence from the Holy Book ‘Quran’ regarding Qiyamul lail or Qiyam ul Layl, it is as below,
Evidences from Quran
There are various verses in the Qur’an that discuss Qiyamullail, as Allah SWT says,
“And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace. And those who spend [part of] the night to their Lord prostrating and standing [in prayer].” (Surah Al-Furqan, 25:63-64)
Here Allah Subhana Wa Ta’ala sending blessing upon those who stand and prostrate to their Lord (Allah) the creator of the universe and the guardian of hereafter. One thing to be remember here is that only standing at night for prayer, i.e. for Qiyam ul Layl is not only thing Allah SWT requires, but Allah also want to see some additional qualities in a person who is having Qiyamul lail, importance of prayer, one should also walk upon the earth easily, and should say the words of peace to the one speaks harshly.
In another verse of the Holy Kuran, Allah says,
“Only those believe in Our verses who, when they are reminded by them, fall down in prostration and exalt [Allah] with praise of their Lord, and they are not arrogant. They forsake their beds, calling upon their Lord in fear and in hope, and spend out of what We have provided them with.” (Surah Al-Sajdah, 32:15-16)
In aforementioned verse of the Holy Qur’an, Allah gives additional qualities of those who offer Qiyam ul Layl prayers at midnights, which Qiyamullail also create some special features and moral values in a person, such as they don’t be arrogant, they forsake their beds when calling upon their Lord, and they fear Allah and have hope in difficult conditions etc.
In another verse, Allah SWT says,
“Is one who is devoutly obedient during periods of the night, prostrating and standing [in prayer], fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the mercy of his Lord, [like one who does not]? Say, “Are those who know equal to those who do not know?” Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.” (Surah Al-Zumar, 39:9)
