Fiqh & Its Definition - Fiqh as Islamic Jurisprudence
Fiqh is an Arabic word which denotes to Law. Fiqh in Islam can be said Islamic law or set of Islamic law. Therefore, Fiqh is Islamic jurisprudence which are researched and designed by most of the ancient Muslim jurists and scholars to implement Islam collectively and comprehensively.
While Muslims believe sharia is divine law, revealed in the form of Quran, and Sunnah (tradition) on Prophet Muhammad SAWW, Fiqh can be said the human understanding of Quran and the Sunnah. Muslim jurists who are able do ijtihad (independent reasoning or the utmost effort an individual can put forth in an activity) to derive rules of fiqh and Sharai Ahkam from Quran and the Sunnah i.e. Islamic sources.
All that leads to different schools of thought in Islamic Fiqh. Some of them get famous as they are considered to be the basis of the Islamic Fiqh in History namely Hanafi Fiqh, Shafai Fiqh, Hanbali Fiqh, Maliki Fiqh and Fiqh Jafariya etc.
All the main Fiqhi understandings are named after the Imams (Jurists) who put forth main struggle to develop them. Later on their successors and students compiled and developed their work in batter than previous form.
Today in all over the world, followers of respective fiqh and Imams of fiqh give fatawas (decisions) on the basis of referring those set of rules i.e. Fiqh. And mostly these Fatwas considered as an Islamic opinion in most of the Muslim society.
